FF Tactics: Ivalice Chronicles Out Now

On June 5th 2026, the highly anticipated conclusion to the Final Fantasy VII Remake Project was finally revealed as the closer to the Summer Games Fest Main Event. Final Fantasy VII Revelation debuted with extensive footage that highlighted exciting new gameplay changes, such as traversal with the Highwind and the FITS system, as well as intriguing narrative, showcasing biblical imagery with Sephiroth holding Cloud above all his disciples. Something that surprised me greatly was the inclusion of a line by Sephiroth, played by a new voice actor. Tyler Hoechlin, whose performance of Sephiroth I enjoyed greatly, has seemingly been replaced by veteran voice actor Travis Willingham. I was initially dismayed by Hoechlin’s disappearance. Then I began to think. What if he is still Sephiroth?
Throughout the years, evidence suggests that everything Tetsuya Nomura does from a story development and marketing perspective is calculated. The numbers 7 and 13 feature prominently throughout the Remake series and Kingdom Hearts respectively. Characters such as Sephiroth say prophetic lines such as “Seven Seconds Till The End” in FFVII Remake, 7 years before its resolve in FFVII Revelation. I believe the choice of voice cast was also deliberate, with Hoechlin and Cody Christian, Cloud's English voice actor, featuring in the same TV show, Teen Wolf. Clearly, as Creative Director, Nomura's decision making is all deliberate, and always holds meaning. Sephiroth voice actors, including Willingham, have played Superman in some capacity. I understand that Hoechlin officially was busy with other projects, but I don't see why Nomura, as deliberate as he is, would not ensure a consistent Sephiroth is heard throughout the trilogy, as all other main voice actors have reported their roles. Something, to me, seems unusual with Willingham’s selection.
Sephiroth’s voice, apart from his appearance in Kingdom Hearts 1, has had a calm, chilling delivery that unsettles due to the quiet confidence Sephiroth exudes. Sephiroth is calculating, always appearing two steps ahead, and the delivery of George Newbern and Tyler Hoechlin perfectly display this quality. When hearing Willingham's voice as Sephiroth in the FFVII Revelation Reveal trailer, the voice is a lot deeper, chilling in its own way, but very distinct compared to previous voices. He sounds almost like my favourite Kingdom Hearts antagonist, Xemnas, I wouldn't have been surprised if Paul St Peter was Sephiroth in Revelation. However, this jarring voice difference had me wondering. Why would someone like Nomura, who is meticulous with his creative decision making, decide to recast a Sephiroth with a very distinct voice compared to what we have heard throughout the Remake series. There is more than meets the eye with this recast.
Throughout the Remake series, two characters have been hinted to know of the future, Aerith and Sephiroth. Aerith warning Cloud not to fall in love with her, suggesting she already knows what is coming. Sephiroth seemingly bringing forward his future remnants in an Advent Children esque fight. FFVII Rebirth continued hinting that both these characters know the events of the original and are actively trying to change it. This approach has allowed the story to be fresh and engaging. The Remake series also features the Whispers, which act in ways to suggest they are trying to preserve the original timeline of events. This includes acts like preventing Barret from being eliminated before his return to Corel. So where do all these things lead me to think regarding Sephiroth and his voice? Why are they relevant?
The developers have made it clear, through their words and actions, that they want to respect the original while adding fresh things to expand upon the legend. I have immensely enjoyed this, as it has allowed for deep analysis in between releases. With Zack's return, question marks over Aerith, and the location of the Black Materia, fans of the original still don't quite know where the story is headed. Is it a sequel? Will everything revert back to the original in the end?
The Remake series has had many unexpected twists, and I believe the developers are saving the biggest one for its ending sequence. I have personally believed that Sephiroth is winning throughout the Remake series, in a more dominant fashion than he was in the original. He seems to be two steps ahead, even of Aerith. In the suggestion that Sephiroth and Aerith know how this all ends, then Sephiroth knows he doesn't achieve his goal. He has to do something different, otherwise he will fail again. The trailers for Revelation, and the official cover art, depict Sephiroth as a Biblical Messiah like figure. This alluded to the original, but what if this time he does win? What if he does so by making everyone think he has lost?

Sephiroth has always manipulated the gang, convincing them to change destiny, which I believe, actually have him more control over theirs. I think the real Sephiroth is going to have one of his Reunion Disciples play his role to perfection, and lead the party to believe in his demise. Sephiroth will then catch them off guard, allowing him to obtain both the White and Black Materia. The trailers suggest he does get a hold of the White Materia, something he did not have in the original. Narratively, this is possible, but how do the developers turn this twist into something more for the players? How does it truly shock us? By having 2 Sephiroth actors.
Thought the points discussed throughout, I believe the casting of Willingham was tactical, not forced. I believe Hoechlin is still Sephiroth, with Willingham playing the Disciple. Due to the intricacies of the Japanese language, two actors do not need to play the role in the Japanese dub. Remake already showed Sephiroth refer to himself with two pronouns, Watashi and Ore. I believe by having a jarring, distinct Sephiroth voice throughout Revelation compared to the past, players can be properly fooled by the bait and switch. Evidence from the trailers does suggest Square might be leaning into the Meta to provide the ultimate twist to ensure Revelation has a blockbuster finale. Cloud, at the end of the reveal trailer says the line “I wouldn't have made it this far without you guys”, as the camera pans away from the gang, showing us them. Cloud is talking to them, but what if the developers are talking to us? Square has mentioned that fan support has kept them motivated throughout development of this unprecedented project. The most telling line is the only one Sephiroth has said in any promotion for Revelation. “Let us put your faith to the test, Cloud”. Maybe the developers are asking us the same question. Is this really Sephiroth?
This theory provided my take on Sephiroth's new voice. I have deep respect for all those who have voiced Sephiroth, and believe Travis Willingham will do an excellent job in the role. I just wanted to provide a unique alternative to what the developers have said. Journey's End will be memorable.
