Eternity - Memory Of Lightwaves Perfectly Encapsulates the Feeling of Longing

Final Fantasy X-2 is the sequel to one of my favourite Final Fantasy games in Final Fantasy X, and I can't get myself to play it. Not because I dislike it, I really enjoy the mission based structure and find the narrative setup intriguing. It is because I find it difficult to boot up because of the main menu theme, Eternity - Memory Of Lightwaves. The ending to X had a deep emotional impact on me, and because of the special bond Tidus and Yuna shared, I find it hard to continue on with X-2. Eternity is a beautiful song that plays an important role too, in my hesitation.

A Melancholic Piano

Eternity is a piano theme with jingling sounds in the distance. A simmering synth comes in, and reminds me of the distance between Tidus and Yuna. The piano grows to a quicker pace as I reminisce about X, the events that unfolded, and where we are left now. This song encourages reflection, of a bygone time of happiness. I feel this music perfectly captures the feeling Yuna has of longing for Tidus and wanting to find him. I feel that sadness every time I listen to Eternity.

Where is Tidus?

I feel Eternity perfectly fits the narrative of X-2. The World has changed, and while it should be celebrated that the perpetual death that Sin brought is now over, one can't help but remember the long journey with friends. After such a journey, the X gang have all, naturally, drifted to do their own things, and Yuna feels the sadness of this. Most of all she feels Tidus’ void. While she can visit the others, Tidus is gone, and this hurts her, and motivates her pursuit. Her longing is felt in Eternity.

So Wonderfully Composed I Find it Hard to Listen to

The composition by Noriko Matsueda and Takahito Eguchi makes me feel the sadness I believe Yuna has in her longing for Tidus. Just as Yuna finds it hard to let go of Tidus and the time they shared, I find it hard to move on from the wonderful journey that was Final Fantasy X. I felt the ending with Tidus swimming was perfect, allowing for a positive outlook on his life. I'm not sure I want that memory to be forgotten, just like Yuna doesn't want to believe Tidus is actually gone. Eternity, as a main menu theme, is perfect for Final Fantasy X-2.
